River Cup Guide to the Old Course
Photos from the 1998 River Cup Tour of Scotland The twenty golfers on the 1998 River Cup Tour of Scotland were lucky enough to play the famed Old Course at St. Andrews on Friday, June 25. The first foursome of five groups teed off at 9:50 am in moderate weather - 60-65 degrees fahrenheit - with light showers late in the round. Later groups off the tee after 3:30 had cooler conditions under generally overcast skies. Weather in Scotland is incredibly "changeable" - be prepared to withstand several weather patterns during an 18 hole round.
Getting tee times on the Old Course is not a simple proposition. If you have a large group going to Scotland, be prepared to send in requests for tee times more than a year in advance. Even requests received well in advance are not guaranteed to be filled. If you go to the Old Course without tee times secured, be prepared for disappointment. The ballot system used to fill tee times for those seeking a round is chancy at best and in most cases unsuccessful so do not rely on the ballot system to get a foursome on the Old Course unless you are willing to risk not getting on the course during your stay in Scotland.
To increase your chances of getting on the course, use a reputable tour company specializing in Scotland golf packages. The River Cup Tour of Scotland used SGH Golf of Cincinnatti, Ohio, for its tour and highly recommends their services. SGH Golf can be reached in the United States at 800-284-8884. If you would like more information about their services before you call them, feel free to send email with your questions to sinclair@kingcrest.com. We have no connection to SGH Golf and offer their name and contact information only because of our fortunate experience with them.
By popular demand, a hole by hole description of the Old Course is now available here on the River Cup Tour of Scotland Web Site. Follow the links to the holes below to view detailed information for each hole. Hole descriptions and images for each hole are taken from various sources on the Internet and have been edited for use on the River Cup Tour of Scotland Web Site. The tips from "Big John" are from John Stevenson, 6'7" Old Course caddie.
