Plan of the 4th green

The 4th - Ginger Beer, 419 yards

A long and difficult hole requiring an accurate drive between a plateau and heavy rough. A grassy mound guarding the front of the green influences the second shot.

Drive slightly to the right of the just visible flag, down the narrow valley, but for greater safety, markedly left over the prominent mound at about 150 yards. The safer shot does, however, make for difficulty in playing to the green. The long second shot must carry an array of bunkers and negotiate the grassy mound in front of the green which itself tends to shed the shot from the left to the right. The shot from the right of the fairway stands a better chance of holding true on the gently rising green.

This was once known as the "Hole of Cunnin Links", Cunnin being the old Scots for rabbit. This commemorates the period when the Links were let as a rabbit warren; as the only lapine interest in golf is the construction of unplayable bunkers this precipitated litigation that went as far as the House of Lords.

Big John says...

Very similar to the 2nd with the drive, with either a safe left or for an easier second shot down the right straight for the flag. Second shot should again be right of the pin to leave yourself an uphill putt.
