The 3rd - Cartgate Out, 352 yards
Three bunkers guard the right side of the fairway and the deep "Cartgate Bunker" lines the front of a double green which is shared with the 15th hole. A good drive will leave a player with a short pitch or bump-and-run shot.
The flag is visible to the left of the prominent bush. There is plenty of fairway to the left of the flag before the Principal's Nose bunkers on the 16th hole come into play, but a line slightly to the right of the flag, although courting the a swarm of shallow bunkers to the right will give you a second which is less likely to be harvested by the grinning Cartgate bunker. The green falls gently from the Cartgate towards the back right, then there is a quite steep step.
More depressions show that the course of the track had continually to be changed as the cart wheels broke through the shallow turf into the sand beneath, in which the carts foundered.
Big John says....
Aim for the little hut to the left of the mound leaving a straight forward wedge past the pin clearing the dip at the front of the green again leaving a uphill putt.
