Plan of the 18th green

The 18th - Tom Morris, 354 yards

Running parallel to and in the opposite direction of hole number one, the finishing hole poses little danger. A short tee shot may land in a steep valley in the middle of the fairway and the huge green sees its share of three-putts.

Drive straight for the R&A Clock. The road across the fairway is not a hazard. The front of the green is guarded by the Valley of Sin. The general slope is from back right to front left. It is important not to be short with the approach shot.

The green once sat on a high mound fronted by a 'considerable gulf' possibly the origin of the term 'The Valley of Sin'. There would appear to have been further holes to the east of the eighteenth, but their precise location cannot now be determined.

Big John says....

The objective here is to keep the ball between the two white fences! Ideally aim for the clock on the R&A Clubhouse. Hit enough club to clear the Valley of Sin ! Always strike your putt firmly or the many small breaks will take effect.

Beware to all golfers used to parkland courses, into the wind you must always take at least one or two clubs extra and the ball will stop on the green. Down wind don't be afraid to land the ball short as it will run more than you'll be used to. Remember to give the caddie a generous tip for a good job done!
