Plan of the 17th green

The 17th - The Road Hole, 461 yards

The famous "Road Hole". The drive must clear the wall of the hotel. The second shot is even more dangerous. The "Road Bunker" bites into the front left portion of the tiny green and the forementioned road runs diagonally across the back.

A most celebrated and feared hole. Drive over the 'Black Sheds' with a touch of draw. The carry is 180 yards increasing to the right. The second demands great accuracy to avoid the road to the right and the Road Hole Bunker (3) to the left, and strength to master the rise guarding the front right corner of the green.

The projecting corner of the wall which gives the hole its character, predates the coming of the railway in 1847. The dark sheds facing the tee are reconstructions of the famous Black Sheds which were demolished when the railway closed.

Big John says....

For the easiest of second shots to this most difficult of par 4s hit a slight fade on the church spire. This will leave you with a long iron to the very narrow green aiming to the right of the pin. If the flag is tucked behind the bunker you can go left of the bunker and leave yourself a fairly straight forward chip and putt.
