Plan of the 14th green

The 14th - Long Hole, 523 yards

Par is a good score on St. Andrews' longest hole. Out of bounds lurks to the right off the tee and five bunkers - "the Beardies" - are to the left. The second shot must carry two more treacherous bunkers - "Hell" and "the Grave" - and the third must be well-placed to hold the narrow green.

The line is just to the left of the wall angle. A drive pulled to the left of the Elysian fields will be gathered by the Beardies bunkers or a bank of rough and will almost certainly result in a dropped shot. The second, except in the case of a very long drive, should be played onto the fifth fairway to the left of Hell Bunker. The third shot will do well to hold the hog-backed green which slopes sharply from front to back.

Note how the difference in ground height on either side of the right wall shows how the wind blown sand continues to accumulate.

Big John says....

Many people reckon this is the hardest hole of the course. Aim for the R&A Clubhouse off the tee. For an easier line in aim down the 5th fairway on the left with your second shot, avoiding HELL Bunker ! Third shot a straight forward wedge making sure you are past the flag leaving you with an uphill putt.
