Nairn's

Perhaps the references in Harry's journal to "Nairn's" and "a Nairn's excursion to Rankeillour" require a bit of explanation! Nairn's was and still is a manufacturer of floor coverings in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in the area known as Fife. At the time of Harry and Alex's emigration, it would have had a considerable workforce. They no doubt would organise work outings by train, possibly to the Scottish town of Rankeillour (near Cupar) and these outings, according to Harry Clark, sounded as though they must have been quite a picnic!
