Plan of the 16th green

The 16th - Corner of the Dyke, 351 yards

A drive down the right side brings risk and potential reward. A narrow strip of fairway rests between the "Principal's Nose" bunker and the out of bounds to the right, but if found it leaves a simple pitch to the green. The safer path from the tee is to the left, but that leaves a difficult approach over a series of bunkers.

Prudent golfers drive to the left of the Principal's Nose bunkers visible at 180 yards, with out of bounds on the right. The shot to the green is threatened by Grant's (2) and Wig (2) bunkers. It is wise to be long to master the significant bank to the front of the green. There is little trouble through the back.

While it might appear that the line of the former railway determines the design of the hole, it actually follows, more or less the old turf boundary wall, the remains of which can just be seen to the front right of the green.

Big John says....

Here you have the choice of two lines, the first safe down the left towards the flag on the 2nd green leaving a medium iron over the two bunkers or if you wish to gamble a straight drive towards the railway sheds hugging the out of bounds which will leave an easy short iron to the green. The green slopes slightly left to right so aim a little left of the flag.
