Swami's Fearless Fourball Predictions
October 30: The Swami batted an even .500 with last year's predictions. With another year like that, he can push his lifetime batting average near the Mendoza line. Without any further ado, here are the Swami's fearless predictions for this year's fourball matches at CCV's Westhampton Course.Doug Urquhart/Richard Locke (WOCC) v. Ear Moorman/Doug Westmoreland(CCV)
Ear Moorman and Doug Westmoreland have paired up in more fourball matches (9) than any duo in River Cup history. Their 5-2-2 record is deceiving - they haven'thad a win since 1998 and that victory is tarnished by the fact that a woeful Joby Klotz was on the losers' end. Urquhart and Locke are paired up for the first time. Locke's 15 this year should be enough to carry the Willow Oaks' tandem to a win. Locke played to a 12 in last year's River Cup. "I had to play all day Saturday and Sunday last weekend to get in enough rounds to move that handicap up," said Locke. "Posted 14 scores in 2 days -just another typical weekend." WOCC 6 - CCV 3
Paul Strauss/Tom McCandlish (WOCC) v. Pajama Chandler/Blake Dennis (CCV)
Blake Dennis refused to play this year if he had to contend with Willow Oaks' Jim Dwyer again. Dennis is 0-3 against Dwyer in just the past 2 years. "I promise that if I don't have to play Dwyer this year, I will move out of town after this year's matches and you'll never have to see me again," Dennis pleaded with Captain Jim Nelson. Nelson was more than happy to grant Dennis' request and hopes he carries out his end of the bargain. CCV 6 - WOCC 3Chuck Ditsler/Jake Savage (WOCC) v. Jeff Hudgins/Chris Young(CCV)
Chuck has a perfect record whenever he plays in the United States - perfectly horrid.Ditsler is 0-for-life on U.S. soil. Captain Langdon Moss has paired him with 7 different partners in 9 lifetime RC fourball matches and Ditsler still hasn't been able to scratch out a win. "It's not just me," Ditsler says in his own defense. "Obviously none of those other guys I've played with are any good either." River Cup Rookie Jake Savage makes partner #8. Could this be Chuck's lucky year? The Swami bets not. Sorry Jake, but welcome to the River Cup anyway. CCV 7½ - WOCC 1½
Eddie Eddins/Jeff Hull (WOCC) v. J.F. Dunlap/John Leitch (CCV)
Eddins shares the record for River Cup low-round with the 70 he posted in last year's fourball matches. To prepare for this year's River Cup as a first-time pairing, Eddins and Hull slept together for a week on a trip to England earlier this spring. Their golf hasn't improved any but they sure are a cute couple. WOCC 7½ - CCV 1½Scott Warren/Chuck Byrd (WOCC) v. Mike Miller/Mark DeBlois(CCV)
Chuck Byrd returns to the River Cup after a two-year hold-out over appearance fee disputes. "They weren't going to pay me an appearance fee and I disputed that," says Byrd. "My son is getting appearance fees to play at UVa - why shouldn't I get one for the River Cup?" Mike Miller and Mark DeBlois were paired up once before and beat a sorry Doug Urquhart/John Hyslop team like a rented mule. No reasonto think a struggling Scott Warren can save partner Chuck Byrd from a similar fate. CCV 6 - WOCC 3
Paul Sinclair/Marty Donlan (WOCC) v. Brother Scott/Jack Rogers (CCV)
Donlan and Sinclair are one of the most feared fourball pairings in the River Cup. As a matter of fact, Donlan and anybody make up a feared pairing - everybody fears those marathon matches against Donlan. "I'm carrying flashlights and rations with me for this match," a well-prepared Jack Rogers said recently of the match. "If this one goes long, I'm ready." CCV 4½ - WOCC 4½Jim Dwyer/Dennis Ryan (WOCC) v. Cabell Moore/Jim Nelson (CCV)
The Moore-Nelson pairing is an inspired one. They have two of the most recognizable swings in the River Cup. You won't find Nelson's "pause that refreshes" or Moore's low-rider takeaway in any golf swing instructional video - unless it's in the "Before" picture. Add inDennis Ryan's famous double-deke takeaway and this match is a golf instructor's nightmare. Pity the smooth swinging Jim Dwyer having to watch all this going on around him. WOCC 6 - CCV 3
John Hyslop/Brad Smallwood (WOCC) v. Wes Morck/Joe Buhrman(CCV)
Brad Smallwood has been working on his natural golf swing for years now and seems to have it figured out. "I've figured out that no matter what I do, it still sucks," says Smallwood. Partner John Hyslop will no doubt dispense plenty of helpful advice to Brad during the course of the round. Smallwood's swing problems are offset by untested CCV first timer Joe Buhrman's lack of experience. Buhrman says he will be looking to veteran River Cupper Wes "Mr. 98" Morck for leadership. "Oh I'll lead him alright," says Morck. "Win or lose I'll lead him right to the bar after we play." CCV 4½ - WOCC 4½
