Willow Oaks' Three-Peat in River Cup XIII
CCV Takes Singles Matches at Home
Willow Oaks Wins River Cup for Third Straight Year
October 14: After staking itself to a commanding 51-21 lead in fourball matches on its home course, Willow Oaks was able to hold on for an overall 94-74 win in River Cup XIII after singles play at CCV. The win is Willow Oaks' third straight in the autumn fall classic and its seventh overall in the 13 year history of the event. CCV has 5 wins in that span. The lone tie in the series was in 1990.CCV dominated this year's singles play at its home James River Course on Sunday taking 53 points in singles to Willow Oaks' 43. The Willow Oaks victory wasn't sealed until the next-to-last match of the day when Willow Oaks' two European players, Bobby "Bubbles" Ho and
Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte, came in with wins. Ho and Smythe Hyde-Whyte both play out of Chevin Golf Club in Derbyshire, England. Ho clipped CCV's Ear Moorman 4-2 and Smythe Hyde-Whyte beat JF Dunlap, also a 4-2 win.
Sychronized Swinging: Players warm up on the practice range before singles matchesIn the final match of the day, CCV's lone Euro, Jonathan "Spoon" Reynolds, came home with his first River Cup win in 6 tries, a surprisingly easy 6-0 whitewash of Willow Oaks' John Hyslop. Reynolds' win was an afterthought but Reynolds preened and strutted around the 18th green before an unimpressed crowd of onlookers as if the outcome of the Cup relied on his match. Reynolds surveyed a meaningless 3-foot putt for some 20 minutes before yanking it severely left of target to the jeers of the crowd. "Hey, I am motivated by individual glory, not team victory," crowed Reynolds. "I just wish I'd spent more time reading that putt."
Reynolds was previously winless in River Cup play, but was surprisingly inducted to the River Cup Hall of Fame at the Saturday night Cocktail Party and Business Meeting the evening before his singles win. Induction is an accolade normally reserved for players with at least some success in River Cup play, however slight. Prior to his win on Sunday, Reynolds was not only winless in the River Cup but for all intents and purposes clueless as well.
Preening: Spoon Reynolds on the 18th green after first win in River CupReynolds was inducted to the Hall through the backdoor under a little-known and never before used "mileage" exemption. The exemption permits induction of players who have traveled in excess of 25,000 miles to play in the River Cup. Many observers believe that his selection to the Hall of Fame has lowered the bar for induction so low it has rendered the honor virtually meaningless and intend to petition the Hall of Fame Committee for narrowing of the mileage exemption. William "Crunch" Correll, the first River Cupper inducted to the Hall of Fame bemoaned Reynolds' selection. "A European in the Hall of Fame?" an upset Correll asked. "Next thing you know they'll induct John Leitch." When informed that Leitch had been inducted years ago, Correll shook his head in disbelief.
In other singles action at CCV's James River Course Sunday:
- Jeff Hudgins refused to play his match at the correct tee time and has been fined an unspecified amount. Hudgins claimed that he melts when it rains on him and given a forecast for afternoon rain, he awoke playing partners and the River Cup Commissioner from their sound sleeps at an uncivilized hour demanding that his match be played several hours earlier than designated in order to avoid the rain. "I had no chance to beat Eddins if he got a full night's rest and I really don't like to play golf unless it's 70 degrees and sunny anyway," said Hudgins. "It didn't matter to me when the other guys wanted to play - I wanted to play earlier." Eddins ballooned from a River Cup record 70 on Friday to 89 on Sunday. Hudgins blanked Eddins 6-0 for the day. "My strategy of getting Eddins out there before he woke up obviously worked," Hudgins beamed.
- Tom McCandlish opened a can of whip-ass and applied it to George Whitley, whose only good shots during the day were entirely dependent on luck. "I have no skill," Whitley muttered after McCandlish thrashed him 6-0. "If it weren't for random strokes of good luck, I would never hit a good shot." McCandlish made the turn in even par 36 and carded 76 for the day. His 2 day total of 152 took overall medal play honors for this year's River Cup. His 152 is 3 strokes off the record set by Jeff Hudgins in the 1996 rendering. Overall medal play honors is meaningless in the River Cup, but McCandlish nonetheless made sure that everyone within ear shot at the awards celebration at the 18th green heard about it. "Hey, somebody needs to blow my horn and I doubt the River Cup media will," declared McCandlish. "I also want to thank my playing partner Paul Sinclair for doing such a great job reading putts for me. I was totally confused on every green but Paul's reads were perfect every time!" Sinclair himself had some whip-ass applied by Jack "The Silent Assassin" Rogers, who bagelized Sinclair 6-0. "I was too busy reading putts for McCandlish," Sinclair claimed after the match.
- Joby Klotz took a 6-0 win over Wes "Mr. 97" Morck. Morck's only accomplishment during the match was to justify his recent nickname change. Morck posted a 97 for the day.
Willow Oaks Takes Commanding 51-21 Lead After Fourball; River Cup Record Falls
October 12: Willow Oaks got off to a quick start in fourball matches on their home course today as Bobby "Bubbles" Ho, playing in his first River Cup, carried partner John Hyslop to an easy 7½ - 1½ win over a past-his-prime John Leitch and Mark Deblois. The match was highlighted by John Hyslop's tee ball on the 8th hole, whichdecimated the previous record for shortest drive in River Cup history. Hyslop's tee ball caromed off a tree and he was forced to trod backward to hit his second shot. The negative yardage tee ball easily outshines previous record holder Chris Young's 12 inch tee ball in the 1997 River Cup. Young still holds the record for the largest divot in River Cup history, set on the same tee shot as his previous short-drive record. In other action from today's matches:
Easy Day/Hard Day: Eddie Eddins followed up his 70 in fourball with 89 in singles
- A controversial conclusion on the 18th hole in the match between Willow Oaks' Chuck Ditsler and Tom McCandlish against CCV's Will Scott and George Whitley left onlookers scratching their heads. To the surprise of a large gallery at the 18th, Scott rolled in a 6 foot putt for par, forcing Tom McCandlish to sink a twisting 5 footer for par to halve the match. McCandlish, brain sore from carrying Chuck Ditsler throughout the day, failed to realize his putt meant anything threw his ball on the green, failed to remove his mark, and knocked the putt one-handed into the hole. The result of the match is still in question, awaiting a ruling on whether McCandlish's failure to remove his mark results in loss of the hole and thus loss of the match. McCandlish pleaded with CCV's Will Scott to concede the ruling and accept a halve, but Scott refused. USGA rules officials are being consulted. A ruling is expected prioer to Sunday's singles matches.
- Paul Sinclair birdied 10, 11, 12, and 13 as he and partner Paul Strauss easily handled CCV's Jeff Hudgins and Rob Hershey. "I read all those putts for Paul, just like I read all the putts for Mike Augst when he birdied 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 when I carried him in 1995," said Strauss. "I can obviously read putts - there's no other explanation for Sinclair making them."
- Spoon Reynolds and Wes Morck hit 100 shots between them on the front-9 and were (not surprisingly) shut out on the 18 hole match after 12 holes at the hands of Doug Urquhart and Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte. Reynolds and Morck were able to retain a semblance of pride by taking 1½ points on the back nine, but Reynolds immediately lodged a howling complaint over opponent Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte's handicap. "Smythie is just not a 17 handicap," said Reynolds. "He plays off 12 at our home course and everybody back home says he is sandbagging as a 12." The handicap committee obliged Reynolds by reducing Hyde-Whyte's handicap to 12, but also reduced everyone else in the foursome by 5 strokes.
- Jim Nelson was severely criticized by CCV team members for his failure to supply team hats, a gaffe that may well lead to Nelson's ouster from the captaincy he has held since 1994. "The Willow Oaks guys looked so good in their nice red caps," a disgusted Mark Deblois bellowed after the round. "Everywhere I looked I saw those nice hats and wondered where my team's hats were. I don't think I'm going to let Jim come to the party at my house tomorrow."
- In a minor sidenote, Eddie Eddins of Willow Oaks had a good round going but was leaking oil severely at the end of his round. Eddins bogeyed 2 of the last 3 holes coming in, but nonetheless carded a mediocre 70.
Swami's Fearless Fourball Predictions
October 11: Despite an accuracy rating of only .073 over the past 12 years, the Swami nevertheless takes another crack at picking this year's River Cup fourball winners. All matches are played off the low handicap in the match (numbers beside player name denote the player's handicap for the match). 3 points are awarded for winning the front-9, 3 points for winning the back-9, and 3 points for winning the 18 hole match.
Dwindling Hope: CCV Captain Jim Nelson counts points late Sunday as CCV chances fadeLeitch12/Deblois13 (CCV) v. Hyslop10/Ho17 (WOCC)
John Leitch is anxious to prove that he is back to his old form. But even if he is, it really doesn't matter since he is the self-proclaimed unluckiest golfer in the world. "Greg Norman has had great luck in his career compared to me," whines John. John Hyslop's handicap has been dropping like a bomb in Afghanistan since he posted his career first sub-80 round three weeks ago. If English River Cup Rookie Bobby "Bubbles" Ho can lend some support to Hyslop, Willow Oaks should take this one. WOCC 6 - CCV 3Blake Dennis2/Tommy Pruitt10 (CCV) v. Jim Dwyer2/Eddie Eddins6 (WOCC)
Blake Dennis hates the Willow Oaks course. "I can't break 90 on this course on a good day," says the 2- handicap Dennis. His partner Tommy Pruitt has one of the best short games in this year's River Cup field – unfortunately, it is off the tee. Tommy was recently expelled from the Dave Pelz Short-Game School for his negative impact on other students at the school and should be no help at all. Jim Dwyer and Eddie Eddins should be able to capitalize. WOCC 6 - CCV 3Wes Morck16/Spoon Reynolds17 (CCV) v. Doug Urquhart11/Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte17(WOCC)
Other golfers wear magnets on their wrists – Wes Morck puts them in his putter. Wes claims the magnets' magical powers heal his stroke. His partner Spoon Reynolds is tired of losing and thinks he has a cream puff opponent in the mysterious Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte. "Smythie's been chasing terrorists in Afghanistan since September 11," says Reynolds. "I doubt he got much practice on his golf swing over there at the Royal Kabul Golf & Country Club." Magnets rule. CCV 7½ - WOCC 1½Rob Hershey8/Jeff Hudgins3 (CCV) v. Paul Sinclair5/Paul Strauss7 (WOCC)
Paul Strauss relied on Mike Augst's 31 on the back-nine at Willow Oaks in 1995 for his only fourball win in 4 goes. "If Sinclair posts 31 on the back-nine in this match, we are a lock," said Strauss at a recent press conference. Media members in the press tent immediately chalked this one up for CCV. CCV 6 - WOCC 3Brother Scott9/George Whitley9 (CCV) v. Tom McCandlish7/Chuck Ditsler6 (WOCC)
Two words: Chuck Ditsler. Sorry Tom. CCV 7½ - WOCC 1½Ear Moorman14/JF Dunlap13 (CCV) v. Joby Klotz17/Brad Smallwood16 (WOCC)
Ear Moorman has a new partner in JF Dunlap this year. "I've been playing with Doug "Invisible" Westmoreland for the last nine years and haven't had a bit of help in all that time," says Moorman. "If JF ever wins a hole for us, I may not know how to handle it."Dunlap's response: "I'll be there if Ear needs a good cigar, but other than that I plan to be just as invisible as Doug has been for him." Opponent Brad Smallwood has taken up natural golf this summer – "give me another natural triple bogey on that hole, please." Despite the combined 6 MVP awards won over the years by Klotz and Smallwood, this match is a toss-up. WOCC 4½ - CCV 4½
Putting: Dennis Ryan putts on 18th hole in Friday's fourball matchesJack Rogers4/Chris Young10 (CCV) v. Dennis Ryan7/Scott Warren10 (WOCC)
Young and Rogers had a 9-0 win in fourball together last year, but you can discount that since it was over – guess who – Chuck Ditsler and partner Jim Dwyer. It won't be so easy this year. Dennis Ryan's famous double-pump takeaway gives everybody the heebie-jeebies. Players have been known to fall down when they start walking during Dennis' first deke takeaway, only to find they still have another swing to wait for. WOCC 6 - CCV 3Jim Nelson10/Cliff Culley7 (CCV) v. Richard Locke12/Jeff Hull8 (WOCC)
Richard Locke's handicap moves faster than Robert Mitchell's golf swing. He went from 9 to 12 in the course of a month, mostly by virtue of the phantom 93's he stuck in the handicap computer on 9/30. "Well, I've definitely shot a lot of 93's," said Richard when caught in the act. "I just haven't put any of them in over the last 5 years or so. What, you're not supposed to put them in all at once?" CCV Captain Jim Nelson has been plagued by a reverse weight shift that has given him nightmares since he saw it horrifically captured on film during a recent golf trip to Ireland. "I wake up at night with cold sweats after dreaming about it," quivers Jim. "I've tried golf lessons, but I think what I really need is an exorcist." WOCC 7½ - CCV 1½
2001 River Cup Matches and Tee Times Set
October 8: Matches and tee times for this year's River Cup were set at tonight's Captain's Pairing Party at Phil's. As Captains Jim Nelson and Langdon Moss matched wits trying to come up with some advantage in the match pairings, a mostly disinterested crowd heckled the unfortunate waitress stuck with the duty of schlepping beers and sandwiches to the table. She was well reimbursed for her troubles when the River Cup party was able to come up with $3.15 for her tip.Highlight match in Friday's fourball at Willow Oaks:
- George "Ear" Moorman and new partner J. F. Dunlap take on Joby Klotz and Brad Smallwood. Ear and Joby are long-time protagonists who can agree on only one thing: Virginia Tech has a football team. J. F. has the unenviable task of filling the shoes of Doug Westmoreland, who has teamed with Ear for the last nine years in River Cup play. Record for the Moorman/Westmoreland duo in that span: a creditable 5-2-2. Says the sentimental Moorman about his former partner's absence this year: "Good riddance. I've finally got a partner who knows which end of the stick to hold this year!" The Moorman/Dunlap duo should be easily recognizable from a distance - look for the longest cigars on the course. Klotz and Smallwood are the only multiple winners of the coveted MVP award in the River Cup: Klotz has won the award twice while Smallwood is a four-time winner.
Highlight matches in Sunday's singles play at CCV:
- The third "Captains' Clash" - a match between CCV Captain Jim Nelson and Willow Oaks Captain Langdon Moss. After a win over Scott Warren in the inaugural River Cup in 1989, Nelson was drubbed by Moss 4-0 in their first meeting in 1990. Moss followed that win up with another in 1991 and Nelson suffered through another nine years of singles losses before finally winning again in last year's event - ironically, another win over Scott Warren. Were it not for Chuck Ditsler's ineptitude in both singles and fourball - Nelson has at least been able to capture a fourball win along the way over the course of the years - Nelson would no doubt be the subject of greater media skewering. "Thank God for Chuck," a thankful Nelson mused recently. "If he weren't around, my lousy record would be even more painfully obvious than it already is."
- A former-MVP match-up between John Leitch and Joby Klotz. Leitch and Klotz are also River Cup Hall of Famers. Leitch is seeking to capture past glory in this year's event. He has been off-form (way off-form) since his MVP year in 1990. His most notable achievement since that time was in the 1993 River Cup, when he set a record (since beaten) for the shortest drive in River Cup play. On the par five 6th at CCV's James River Course, Leitch's drive was a meager eight yards, six of them lateral. Leitch's short-drive record was obliterated by Chris Young in the 1997 "Monsoon River Cup" when Young's drive on the first tee sailed (dribbled would perhaps be a more proper description) only 12 inches. Young's divot - a clod of earth that took most of the teeing area with it - far outdistanced the ball.
- Jeff Hudgins' return to River Cup play against Willow Oaks' feisty Eddie Eddins makes for a match that should be a study in contrasts. Hudgins prefers a classic, high-ball draw (although he seldom gets it) while Eddins likes to keep the ball below knee-level with an unsightly rightward carve to it. If Hudgins can put up with the sight of Eddins' ball-flight without getting totally out of rhythm, he should be able to garner a win. But Eddins is known to destroy the confidence of the most stalwart of competitors by making pars from the most outrageous places.

Captains Announce Fourball Teams for 2001 River Cup
October 4: Captains Langdon Moss of Willow Oaks and Jim Nelson of CCV have announced their respective club's fourball teams in preparation for the assignment of matches at Monday evening's Captain's Pairing Party. The Pairing Party is scheduled for Monday, October 8, at 7:00 pm at Phil's Continental Lounge on Grove Avenue.Captain Langdon Moss of defending Cup holder Willow Oaks has announced the following fourball teams for matches to be held Friday, October 12, at Willow Oaks Country Club:
- Jim Dwyer - Eddie Eddins
- Paul Sinclair - Paul Strauss
- Tom McCandlish - Chuck Ditsler
- Dennis Ryan - Scott Warren
- Richard Locke - Jeff Hull
- John Hyslop - Bobby Ho
- Doug Urquhart - Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte
- Joby Klotz - Brad Smallwood
Jim Nelson's CCV team will take to the course with the following fourballers:
- Blake Dennis - Tommy Pruitt
- Rob Hershey - Jeff Hudgins
- Jack Rogers - Chris Young
- Brother Scott - George Whitley
- Jim Nelson - Cliff Culley
- Mark Deblois - John Leitch
- Ear Moorman - J.F. Dunlop
- Wes Morck - Spoon Reynolds
The Captains' selection of partners has raised eyebrows at both clubs and has already sparked a storm of criticism by some of the players. Langdon Moss was the target of the most critical comments, most notably by Tom McCandlish. "How Langdon has the nerve to stick me with Chuck '0-for-life' Ditsler is beyond me," groused McCandlish. "I'm probably the strongest player on the Willow Oaks team and to stick me with Ditsler defies all logic - nobody wins with Ditsler," continued the characteristically modest McCandlish.
Moss' repeat pairing of Paul Strauss and Paul Sinclair is also a mystery. Strauss and Sinclair were blanked 9-0 at the hands of Ted "Pajama" Chandler and Chris "Play Hard Partner" Young in a 1998 match at CCV's Tuckahoe Creek Course. The Pauls were down 4 holes after 4 holes were played - and then the match got really ugly. Pajama Chandler shot a River Cup fourball record 72 on the day. "I'll never forget the look on their faces that day standing on the 5th tee," chortled Chris Young talking about the match recently. "They looked like a couple deer caught in the headlights. I would have helped Pajama some, but he didn't look like he needed it that day." Strauss has been searching for a partner to carry him since his lone fourball win in 1995 when his partner Mike Augst shot 31 on the back nine at Willow Oaks en route to a 9-0 win over CCV's John Gentry and Robert Mitchell.
The only Willow Oaks player happy with Moss' pairings was Jim Dwyer. Dwyer suffered through 2 years of fourball play with Chuck Ditsler and was ecstatic to learn that Moss had paired him with Eddie Eddins for the 2001 matches. "Don't get me wrong," said Dwyer. "I'd have preferred someone other than Eddins, but anybody is a step up after Ditsler."
Wes "Mr. 97 (formerly Mr. 98)" Morck of CCV heaped unmitigated scorn on CCV Captain Jim Nelson for his pairing with Jonathon "Spoon" Reynolds. "I played my ass off for Jim in Ireland and I get rewarded with this?" asked an incredulous Morck. "Spoonie's 109 in the 1999 River Cup is the highest score in River Cup history and I have to play with that? I'd rather chew aluminum foil." Flashing a cheshire cat grin, Nelson's only comment was "I served my penance and played fourball with Spoon last year. Now he is someone else's cross to bear."
Handicap Committee ReportThe 2001 River Cup Handicap Committee has announced handicap assignments for this year's matches. Handicaps are subject to change at the whim of the Committee upon the presentation of sufficient evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) justifying a change. Deadline for the presentation of evidence is Monday, October 8, 7:00 pm and must be lodged in person at Phil's.

2001 River Cup Dates Announced
September 19: In a press release today, the River Cup Executive Committee confirmed the dates for the 2001 edition of this autumn golf classic. The Captain's Pairing Party will again be held at Phil's Continental Lounge, long-time host of the River Cup's traditional opening event, on Monday evening, October 8, at 7:00 pm. Fourball matches will be contested Friday, October 12, at Willow Oaks Country Club with concluding singles matches set for Sunday, October 14, at the Country Club of Virginia.Course selection for Sunday's singles matches has not yet been announced. CCV Team Captain Jim Nelson says it is "highly likely we'll be playing the James River Course this year for the first time in several years." River Cup pundits take Nelson's prediction with a grain of salt. "Jim will be lucky if he can get us on at any course at CCV, much less the River Course," harumphed Team Captain Langdon Moss of Willow Oaks, a long-time Nelson protagonist. "Jim ought to take up [CCV team member] George Whitley on his offer to handle course arrangements. George couldn't do any worse than Jim has the last 5 years!"
There was speculation the matches would be affected by the tragic events of September 11 but the Executive Committee was firm in its belief that the matches "should go on as planned to show that America is strong in its resolve to move forward." Security consultants have advised the Committee that there is little danger posed by going on with the matches as scheduled. "I doubt that anyone in Afghanistan - or anywhere else in the world, for that matter - has ever even heard of the River Cup," said one security specialist who asked to remain unidentified. "The likelihood the River Cup would be targeted for anything is virtually - no, in fact it it is actually, zero."
The press release included a list of players selected by the respective Team Captains for the Country Club of Virginia and Willow Oaks. The roster is a "who's he?" of River Cups long since forgotten. Jim Nelson's squad is marked by the return of Jeff Hudgins, a once proud player now relegated to dreaming of past glories. Hudgins has been absent from the CCV side for several years and Nelson's selection of Hudgins for this year's team is the subject of much speculation. "I guess he couldn't find anybody else for the weekend," said Jonathon "Big Spoon" Reynolds in a trans-Atlantic telephone conversation from his country estate outside (way outside) London. "How else can you explain putting a once-a-week player like Hudgins on the team?"
Langdon Moss' Willow Oaks team is highlighted by two international players, Gordon Smythe Hyde-Whyte and Bobby Ho. The return of the shadowy Smythe Hyde-Whyte to this year's event was in doubt when he went underground shortly after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. There were reports he had been sighted in camouflage fatigues in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan. But word reached River Cup headquarters that Smythe Hyde-Whyte would resurface for his tee time on October 12.
Bobby "Bubbles" Ho is making his first appearance in the River Cup this year. He is rumored to be the brother of famed Hawaiian lounge singer Don Ho, leading to widespread hopes that entertainment at this year's River Cup Banquet will be a cut above the standard video fare that has become a drag on the festivities in previous years. Ho's entree to the River Cup came was arranged by long-time friend Spoonie Reynolds. "Jim Nelson asked me if I could bring over some of my hacker friends to keep real golfers from Willow Oaks off their team this year," chortled Spoonie. "I've really stuck them with a load with Bubbles."
