Willow Oaks Dominates in Singles for River Cup Win
10/24/99: The last River Cup rounds of the millenium were played out on a difficult Willow Oaks course under skies that varied from sunny to clouded.
As the final matches made their way to the 18th green, a sky redolent with brilliantly colored clouds grew darker. The last 3 holes of the millenium were played in darkness as the crowd at the 18th green waited for the arrival of the final foursome in a River Cup event that was already decided.
Fittingly, the final 2 matches concluded without a putt dropping. Willow Oaks' Jack Enoch and CCV's Jack Rogers shook hands as they walked to the green and agreed to a halve in their match as they both lay 2 on the green. Jim Dwyer of Willow Oaks conceded his match to CCV's Cabell Moore in a sporting gesture that added to CCV's point total but failed to make a difference in the outcome. Willow Oaks' 98-70 win over CCV was its 6th since 1989 in an annual event renowned more for its sportsmanship than its quality of play.
