One of the members of the original River Cup team from the Country Club of Virginia, Bill "Crunch" Correll is always a focus of media attention during River Cup week. Though his golf skills have diminished over the years - Correll has not qualified to play in the event since 1991 - his well-publicized dalliances make him good copy. Golf Digest has called Correll "the River Cup's answer to Alberto Tomba." People Magazine dubbed him "Warren Beatty in plus-fours." Media attention is particularly high in the hours leading up to the annual River Cup Gala, as tabloids stake out a vantage point outside the party gates hoping to catch a glimpse of Correll as he arrives with his date for the evening.
